    This is an informational database maintained by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) under an ongoing program known as the Priority-based Assessment of Food Additives (PAFA). It contains administrative, chemical and toxicological information on over 2000 substances directly added to food, including substances regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as direct, "secondary" direct, and color additives, and Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) and prior-sanctioned substances. In addition, the database contains only administrative and chemical information on less than 1000 such substances.

    This web site provides a searchable database that lists the energy, water, carbohydrate, protein, lipid, fiber, ash, vitamin, and mineral composition of almost 6000 foods. The USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference can be downloaded for free, and full documentation is available online. Other datasets include retention tables and analyses of nutrients of special interest such as carotenoids, trans fatty acids, isoflavones, selenium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. Reports are now available on selected foods by single nutrient sorted either alphabetically by food description or in descending order of nutrient content. The site also provides links to other food composition web resources.

    MEDLINE is the NLM's premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, nutrition, and the preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from more than 4,600 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 other countries. The file contains over 11 million citations dating back to the mid-1960's. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts.
